From Emotional Suppression To Emotional Health
Recent studies have shown that 29% of men often avoid showing their emotions and 39% say they change their behaviour to appear “masculine”. These are saddening statistics, that suggest many men are struggling with emotional suppression. It’s heartening to see more men reaching out for support as you navigate the complex world of emotions.
Many men find themselves grappling with mental health challenges stemming from the societal pressures to suppress their feelings. The journey toward emotional well-being can feel daunting, but remember that acknowledging your struggles is a powerful first step.
1. Embrace Vulnerability
*Society often teaches us that vulnerability is a weakness, but it’s a strength. Allow yourself to feel and express emotions—whether it’s sadness, joy, anger, or fear. If this is new to you, writing in a journal can be a great way to explore and articulate your feelings. You might be surprised at how liberating it can be to put pen to paper. Speaking to a therapist can also help – the great thing about a therapist is that they aren’t invested in your life in the same way a friend or family member might be. They are OK with you not being OK until you are and will not rush you to feel better.
2. Seek Connection
Surround yourself with people who encourage open dialogue. Friends, family, or support groups can provide a safe space for you to share your experiences. Engaging with others who understand your struggles can help normalise your feelings and validate your experiences. If you are around people who make you feel less than because you express your vulnerability, unfortunately this might just mean you are around the wrong kinds of people. Nobody should make you feel ashamed of having emotions and your circle of people – from friends to your partner – should show you support in these moments.
3. Educate Yourself
Sometimes understanding the “why” behind our emotions can help us process them better. Consider reading books or articles about emotional intelligence, mental health, and the impacts of societal norms on men’s emotional expression. Knowledge can empower you to break free from old patterns.
4. Practice Self-Compassion
Be gentle with yourself as you navigate this journey. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed or even frustrated. Recognize that unlearning years of conditioning takes time and effort. Celebrate small victories along the way, whether it’s opening up to a friend or expressing a feeling that you’ve kept bottled up. Remember that if you have a critical or harsh inner voice, it nearly always is not your own voice – think about whose voice this could be, which can open up a difficult but rewarding journey to create a kinder inner voice that is looking out for you.
5. Engage in Activities that Promote Well-Being
Find hobbies or activities that bring you joy and allow for emotional expression—be it art, music, sports, or even cooking. Engaging in creative outlets can serve as a therapeutic release and help you connect with your emotions in a non-verbal way.
6. Challenge Societal Norms
Advocate for change in your circles. Speak out against the stigma that discourages men from expressing their emotions. By fostering an environment where feelings can be shared openly, you not only help yourself but also others who may be struggling in silence.
It’s never too late to start expressing your emotions and prioritising your mental health. Embracing your feelings is a journey worth taking, and every step you take brings you closer to a more authentic and fulfilling life.
We wish you all the best on your journey.
