Fructose is the sugar found in fruit and added to many processed foods. We are one of the only clinics in London who test for fructose intolerance. The test for fructose intolerance is a breath test.

Fructose is a sugar that is found naturally, such as in fresh fruit, some vegetables and grains, honey, as well as in processed foods containing refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup.

If you have fructose intolerance, the small intestine is unable to absorb all of the fructose you consume. When it arrives in the colon undigested, it causes the production of gases which can lead to bloating, cramping, and diarrhoea.

We offer hydrogen breath testing for fructose intolerance, which measures your body’s response to fructose. All our test prices are clearly indicated on our pricing page. Allowing you to book your test without wondering about any hidden fees.

Our test checks for intolerance to:

  • apple
  • apricot
  • blackberry
  • grape
  • grapefruit
  • melon
  • orange
  • peach
  • pear
  • pineapple
  • plum
  • raspberry

Call our clinic or use our online booking to arrange your food intolerance test. Founded in 1998, we offer decades of experience in testing, diagnosing and helping patients in London.

When should I get tested?

You do not need to have a recommendation from a doctor in order to have this test, although your doctor may recommend it if you are experiencing unexplained symptoms of fructose intolerance, to help with either confirming or ruling out a diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can certain medications affect my blood test results?

Certain medications can interfere with your results. Therefore, we strongly advise you to always tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Can I take the test if I have diabetes?

Yes, but the test must be supervised carefully, as fructose can affect blood sugar levels. Providers may modify or avoid fructose challenge tests for people with poorly controlled diabetes.

What happens if I’m diagnosed with hereditary fructose intolerance?

You will typically need to strictly avoid all sources of fructose, sucrose, and sorbitol. A genetic counselor and metabolic specialist may help guide long-term management.

Can I take this test at home?

No, a fructose blood test requires controlled fructose ingestion and timed blood draws performed by a trained healthcare professional. At-home alternatives do not currently exist.

Can dehydration affect my results?

Being dehydrated may influence blood sugar levels and cause inaccurate readings. That is why it is important to always follow fasting rules but stay normally hydrated before fasting begins.
