Intrauterine contraceptive devices, also known as IUCDs and “coils” are a form of contraceptive that can remain in situ for 3 – 10 years depending on the type. At that point, they must be removed to prevent possible complications. Removal of the coil is quick and easy, especially in the hands of an experienced specialist nurse and can be organised in a 15 – 30 minute appointment.
What should I expect?
You will see a senior specialist nurse who has over 20 years of experience in family planning. She will explain the procedure and discuss your options for future contraception if you do not want to get pregnant. She will also answer any of your questions and explain any risks. The procedure is then undertaken with your consent.
How is a Coil Removed?
Removal of a coil is a quick and safe procedure, some mild period-like pain may occur but would be transient. The coil is removed by gentle traction on the threads.
Our facilities and team
Our clinic is in the Harley Street area of Central London and both our clinical and senior management teams are female-led. We provide comfortable, discreet and COVID-safe facilities that are well-suited to family planning procedures, including a dedicated procedure suite.
Coil Removal FAQs
What is your removal success rate?
The vast majority of coils can be removed without the need for an ultrasound as the coil threads are visible to the examining nurse. Where threads cannot be visualised, you may need a referral for an ultrasound or a gynaecologist referral.
Will I still be protected for a while after the coil is removed?
No, we generally advise that you are immediately fertile after your coil is removed and if you do not want to get pregnant, you should consider a new coil fitted immediately or an alternative form of contraception.
Is coil removal painful?
Most women experience a tiny pinch and a little cramping but not significant pain.
Can I remove the coil myself at home?
IUD removal should always be performed by a trained healthcare professional to avoid complications like uterine injury, infection, or incomplete removal. Please, never try to remove your coil at home.
Do I need contraception after removal?
If you do not want to become pregnant immediately, you should discuss alternative contraception options with your healthcare provider before removal.
