A testicular ultrasound is the next step in checking testicular lumps or investigating testicular pain

It is estimated that around 2,300 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year in the UK. It most commonly affects men aged 15 – 49 and is the most common cancer in this age group of men.

Just like women are encouraged to regularly check their breasts, men are encouraged to check their testicles and scrotum for any lumps or changes and to seek medical advice right away if they notice anything unusual.

A testicular ultrasound is the main diagnostic tool used after examination to determine the nature of a testicular lump or to investigate other symptoms such as testicular pain. It is a painless procedure that involves a smooth ultrasound probe moved around the scrotum to create soundwave-generated images of the inside of the scrotum and testicles.

Testicular Ultrasound FAQs

Does a testicular ultrasound cause burning or pain?

No, this procedure is painless and other than the coolness of the gel, is not uncomfortable.

Can I ask for a male sonographer?

Yes, you absolutely can. Male sonographers are regularly available and should not affect availability of your ultrasound scan.

How will I know my result?

The images from your scan will be sent to a Consultant Radiologist to review, who will draw up a detailed report that is sent to us. One of our GPs will then contact you with your result and any next steps and a copy of your report will be emailed to you.

What if I have testicular cancer?

There are several causes for testicular symptoms and lumps. However, if you are diagnosed with testicular cancer, you will be immediately referred to a Consultant Oncologist via your NHS GP, or privately if you prefer, for fast management. The earlier testicular cancer is detected, the better the prognosis.
