The Syphilis infection is one of the least common sexually transmitted infections in the UK, although the number of diagnosed cases is on the rise. It is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum, & is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. If left untreated, syphilis can lead to serious & potentially fatal health complications, as well as higher vulnerability to infection by other sexually transmitted diseases.
When should I get tested?
You should get tested if you have had unprotected sex, or notice symptoms. The first symptoms are sores on the genitals, which are painless but highly infectious. These may also appear around the mouth, & can develop into a more general rash. In some cases, syphilis will show no symptoms.
