Syphilis testing is through a blood test and results are available within 24 hours.
Syphilis is an infection caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. It is transmitted primarily through vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
Syphilis often does not have any symptoms. Where symptoms present, they tend to appear between ten days and three months after initial infection. The first signs are painless, highly infectious sores on the genitals, which also sometimes appear around the mouth. These may develop into a more general skin rash or sore throat, or symptoms may disappear entirely.
This can be dangerous, as untreated syphilis can lead to serious health complications and increased risk of infection by other sexually transmitted diseases.
Syphilis is treatable with penicillin, and the earlier treatment begins, the easier it is to treat.
