Why should I have COVID-19 PCR test if I have no symptoms?

The reasons to test even if you don't have symptoms
Contrary to popular belief, getting a COVID-19 test is not reserved for when you are showing symptoms. Testing is helpful if you are visiting someone vulnerable, for travel and fit to fly purposes and for work.

At our clinic, all of our staff members are routinely tested for COVID-19 weekly; yes, we are a clinic and want to keep everyone safe but the research is very clear that the majority of carriers of COVID-19 do not present any symptoms.

The study by the Office National Statistics for example, revealed that only 22% of participants that tested positive were showing symptoms. This means that over 70% of the participants that tested positive for COVID-19 were asymptomatic, ie. they did not show any symptoms.

Here are a few reasons why you should be getting a COVID-19 PCR test

Visiting vulnerable people

If you are going to be in contact with vulnerable people (the elderly, those with disabilities or an underlying condition) – for example, you are planning on visiting a parent, grandparent or vulnerable friend after lockdown –  you should consider getting tested.

You think you may have been contact with someone with COVID-19

COVID-19 is very prolific currently, especially in cities. The likelihood you have been in touch with someone with COVID-19 is quite high.

This does not mean you should worry but if you get a call from a friend who has developed symptoms a week after seeing you or a colleague has fallen ill after you’ve been in the office together, you should consider getting tested. You should aim to test within 2 – 7 days after contact but it is also worth testing after this time for your peace of mind.

Excluding COVID-19 when you have vague / other symptoms

COVID-19 can present differently in different people. King’s College’s study highlighted 6 different presentations!

So if you have a runny nose or sniffle, sore throat and other common symptoms we all tend to get within the winter months, please do not dismiss these. Get tested.

Travel

Most international destinations require a negative COVID-19 PCR test and a fit to fly certificate prior to boarding.

This is to reduce the spread of the virus internationally and also airlines are keen to keep their passengers safe while they share the same air and space for prolonged periods of time.

Work

You might work as a freelancer, travelling from place to place or work in an office with others. Routine testing is a good way to keep yourself and others safe – speak to your HR about increasing your company’s routine COVID-19 testing.

Rapid COVID-19 testing is also now available which is great for companies, with results in just 15 minutes.

I was asking this question to myself a few days ago! I wanted to know why I should have a test if I haven’t got any symptoms. Your blog post gave all the answers I needed. Will look to book a PCR test soon. Thanks!

This post has answered all the questions that I previously had. I wasn’t sure if I needed a test if I had no symptoms. Will be getting a test done soon. Thanks!

  • Tara says:

I think with this new varient around, its super important to get a test done, the slightest of feelings could be covid!

    • Alya Marquardt says:

This is true, Tara. The UK variant, for example, is manifesting as sore throat or fatigue rather than the “classic” COVID symptoms. Headaches and back pain are also common symptoms.
