Blood pressure testing
Routine blood pressure checks are recommended, even if you don’t have a history of high blood pressure (hypertension), because the condition frequently does not show symptoms.
A blood pressure check tests how much strain is being put on your arteries and heart by measuring the force of your blood. People with long-term hypertension are at greater risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Increased risk indicators include:
• a diet that is high in salt and/or low in fresh fruit and vegetables
• lack of exercise
• high caffeine or alcohol intake
• having a relative with high blood pressure
If you are concerned about your blood pressure, or would like a check-up, we would be very happy to arrange an initial blood pressure consultation with one of our doctors, who can offer a preliminary lifestyle assessment and talk you through your options. These may include having a full blood profile taken, a course of medication, or advice regarding lifestyle changes.
We can offer a reduced fee on subsequent regular check-ups – please discuss with the clinic manager for more information after your first visit.
If you have fluctuating blood pressure, or if your readings are higher when taken by a doctor than when taken at home (“white coat syndrome”), we may suggest you try our 24-hour blood pressure monitoring service.
