Sexual Health

In our new blog series, Dr Enam Abood takes your medical questions and provides advice to help direct you and help you learn more about your health. Our second question comes from a 49-year-old man in Oxford, UK about erectile dysfunction. One in three men will experience erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives so it is a common problem. But as Dr Abood will tell him, it could be a sign of a broader systemic condition. “I have been married for 5 years and we’ve had a good sex life until recently when I have had trouble maintaining…

Our clinic has recently started running the new testing for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C called “Multiplex testing”.  Research has shown that this is the most accurate way to test for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C at an early stage after exposure. In fact, the research suggests that multiplex testing is 98% accurate after just 10 days of infection.  This makes this test completely unique in both its accuracy and the speed with which it can be used to check for these illnesses. Although you will still need to do an HIV test after a window period as…

Pregnancy and childbirth are physically and emotionally demanding on women. But they are also demanding on the men in their lives. A recent study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that women’s partners also experience a loss of libido in the first three months after childbirth. For women, there are hormonal and biological changes which have a direct impact on sex drives. But there is of course the obvious issue of lack of sleep and the hard work involved with a newborn baby. Parenthood, even in later phases, is challenging to a couple’s intimacy and love life. There…

This is the first in our series of vintage health posters – good for a laugh. Poor girl who modelled for this poster. I wonder if they told her?

Summer lovin’ happens so fast!

It’s that time of year when the sun is out, the sky is blue and the drinking is plentiful. You know I don’t like to nag but I would not be doing my job if I didn’t mention it. It’s also that time of year when casual unprotected sex is on the increase. Everyone is more easy going and the drinks are free-flowing. If you’ve had unprotected sex, you must have a full sexual health check. This is because not all sexually-transmitted diseases have symptoms in their early stages.  Avoiding testing means that you may be passing on diseases to…

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are very uncomfortable and painful. They can also potentially lead to much more serious infections if left untreated. In the hot weather, UTIs are more common because we tend to get dehydrated.  So here are a few tips to help prevent UTIs this summer: 1. Drink plenty of water This helps to flush bacteria that causes UTIs from your bladder and tract. When your urine becomes very concentrated in the summer, so does the bacteria. Most people don’t drink enough water at the best of times but in the summer, it becomes even more vital. Drinking…

It happens. You’re at the Christmas office party. It’s 11 pm. You’ve just had 3 shots of Jagermeister. The DJ puts on George Michael’s Careless Whisper  and before you know it, you’re in the broom cupboard with Dave from IT / Sandra from accounts.  Then you spend a few weeks dealing with the awkwardness and avoiding people in corridors, spend a few more weeks thinking about Christmas presents, get through Christmas, get some Winter sun in January if you’re lucky, wonder about whether you’ll get a Valentine’s card in February… wait a minute. What happened to your check-up? No-one likes talking about STIs. “Boo!…

There was a time recently when billboards were going up all over London offering “fast and effective treatment” for erectile dysfunction (ED) at some pop-up ED clinic or another.  What a terribly irresponsible way to make money! Gentlemen – erectile dysfunction is a symptom, not a condition. One day, I will put up a billboard with just that in big lights. You do not suffer from erectile dysfunction without there being a reason, and sometimes those reasons can be serious. Sometimes scare tactics are necessary in order to get you to take action and seek medical advice, so here some reasons you…

Our clinic has just started using a new instant HIV test that provides the result within 60 seconds.  This particular test was recommended to us by a sexual health specialist centre and is used widely throughout the NHS.  According to the supporting clinical study, this test is accurate to 99.96% and we regularly test its reliability using laboratory-prepared positive and negative samples. This test involves a pin prick in the finger.  The blood is then transfered to a testing membrane which tests for HIV antibodies.  A blue dye is then used to activate the agent within the membrane which indicates…
