What is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection?

With approximately 275 million of infected a year worldwide,  trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection.

Even though it is the most common it’s rather rare.

People infected by trichomoniasis are in higher risk of developing HIV infection if they have an unprotected sexual intercourse with partner infected with HIV; if pregnant may be in higher risk of having an early labour and according to some researches it can aid prostate cancer growth.

It can infect the genital area and the symptoms are unpleasant and can include:

  • Vaginal or penile discharge
  • Irritation
  • Soreness around the genital area
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Pain after sex

In up to half of infected men and women symptoms won’t develop. However they can pass the infection further to their partners.
